I have an idea for something like that that isn’t too broken. Basically, every 3rd level(3, 6, 9, etc.), you could either proceed as normal, or gain the 3rd level feature of a different subclass (pt1)

Interesting compromise would be any time you could gain a subclass feature, you can pick one from one of the other subclasses instead in place of the one you’re at.

If I had a player that wanted to do this instead of considering it a multi class, I personally would let them choose the new fighting style in place of a feet or ability score improvement

I actually allowed my group do this, but took away certain things like having two action surges. it was still kinda broken but it allowed me to make really challenging fights.
