For those who don't know, the man he is talking about is Phineas Gage. Phineas was a Railroad Construction Foreman. Before the incident happened, Gage was clearing rocks for railroads by drilling holes, packing explosives, then using the tamping iron to pack sand and other materials in the hole. While tamping the sand, Gage's tamping iron struck a rock which cause a spark to ignite the explosives sending the tamping iron through his face (behind his left eye) and landing thirty yards away. Miraculously enough, Gage stayed conscious throughout the entire endeavor but there were major consequences of this accident. For one, he, of course, lost the use of his left eye as the iron severed the optical nerve behind the eye. And two, his personality change drastically. Phineas was known as a nice man but after the incident, he was known for a being a very mean and rude person. 12 years after the incident, Gage finally passed away from an epileptic seizure.
