@dw.science: Plasma, the 4th state of matter! Solid, liquid and gas are three fundamental states of matter that we are all familiar with. And we know that a substance can change from the first to the second and even to the third state: Solids, for example ice, become liquid with heat. And if exposed to even more heat, that liquid water turns into a gas — water vapor. If a gas is heated, it turns into plasma. That's a soup of positively charged particles (ions) and negatively charged particles (electrons). More than 99 per cent of the matter we see in space, such as the sun, stars and galaxies, is in the plasma state. But plasma is also visible on earth: when lightning strikes or auroras are seen in the sky.
