It's because they both had a mutual agreement that Godzilla would be alpha on the surface, and Kong would be the alpha in the Hollow Earth, Godzilla believed kong was try to claim the surface too.

They’re more like acquaintances that have respect for each other. They had an agreement and Kong basically broke it by coming to the surface and doing an alpha call. At least that’s what I got from it
