New gator rescued off highway!! Meet Big Mac, our newest rescue alligator!! He is 10’2” and was hit by a car while crossing a highway, thank you to alligator trapper Ron for your compassion and for bringing him to our sanctuary! The gator’s snout and head were injured by the car collision, and what was really concerning was that his eyes were half closed and his pupils would not react to light, but he made it through the night! He is pretty gashed up under his jaws (what would be referred to as our chin) and has a small hole, but it will heal up. He also has a broken and mangled foot/leg!! His foot is just folded over, like the bone is snapped and just twists around in the leg! This is an old healed injury that he seems to be getting along ok with, we will consult with the vet but likely best to leave it alone since it’s already healed up. I checked on him this morning and he’s doing ok!! A big difference between mammals and alligators is that in a situation like this were a raccoon or another mammal was hit by a car, you would want it to get immediate medical attention. For an alligator, there is not much that can be done, and bringing it to the vet because would cause way more stressed and would actually be detrimental to the animal’s health. Any handling at all lill cause stress and could actually kill the animal, so the best thing to do is to leave him alone and let it decompress, and then assess in a few weeks if needed. @bellowingacres #Rescue #AnimalRescue #AnimalSanctuary #ExoticAnimals #Animals #Animals #Mammal #educational #Gator #Alligator #scicomm
