I don’t live in NY so I’m not 100 sure there, but I own restaurants in my city. If you see empty tables it doesn’t mean they’re available. Reservations are key. Tables are being held for reservations

You do not have to tip the host. They find you a table or put you on a wait list if you do not have a reservation. If the host does extra work for you, it is nice to give them a tip.

you don't tip the maitre 'd. they know what tables are free and which server is least busy. it's in their best interest for you to be seated. they have no agenda to keep you from eating

hosts don't "decide" if you get a table, they are reviewing the reservations and the available tables to determine if there is something they can give you. if you're in a big city, nice restaurants

Host manages the reservations, tables and guests. They make sure that there is a table available for the party based on size. They ensure the wait staff isn't overwhelmed by them. They don't get tips.

no need to tip. if they have openings, they'll seat you, if they're full they should tell you a wait time and put your name on the list. depending on the restaurant you might need a reservation

In NYC, you make a reservation. Otherwise, the host will make you wait or give you whatever seating is available, which is usually not the best table or by the bar.

No, usually it’s just places have reservations so they can’t immediately sit people. They have the entire restaurants agenda for the night with them. Are they giving you a wait time?

Apps like Resy and OpenTable work well in my area. Hosts have to seat walk-in customers while considering what the servers and kitchen can manage well without notice. In busy places, it’s a challenge.

I have never tipped a host in my life. Just be respectful. If they sit you at a table you don’t like there is nothing wrong to ask for a different one.

They don’t want to seat you if the staff can’t handle the tables. They don’t want you to get bad service. Open tables could also be for upcoming reservations.

Nothing, tell them you want a table, they will tell you if the have something available and how long the wait is. I’ve never tipped them. But it’s their job to seat you. Waiters don’t do that.

When I was a hostess, my job essentially was to put people at tables to make sure each server had about the same number of tables at any given time. Empty tables are probably just reservations.

You must be going to some boujee places. A lot of those places require a reservation weeks in advance. Normally the bar area is free to sit at though

Make reservations, but generally, “hi, can we please get a table for X people?” The host isn’t deciding if you get a table but the manager who sits where to evenly distribute customers across the wait
