I realised this for myself years ago, and now coach myself into feeling excited about things when I feel anxious. It helps to imagine the benefit of a future state where the anxiety has passed.

the paper also mentions that "replacing" an emotion in general is better strategy than trying to suppress it. that sounds interesting and I'm definitely gonna try that

Question:
Do the audience hear them say it or do they only say it to themselves?

Unfortunate corollary: when I was dealing with anxiety I would get panic attacks when excited because I’d confuse the two. After therapy, realising when I was excited was like flipping a switch

I a 100 percent taught myself to switch on ”excited” instead of ”stage fright” when I was a kid! I realized ”it was the same energy just channeled elsewhere”.

Saying you’re excited also signals to the audience that you’re confident in your ability to perform- giving the audience expectation on how to judge (this person is probably good). Win-win

do they have to say "I'm excited"/"I'm anxious" aloud so the people rating them hear it? that could impact the rating system just as much as it impacts the participant

Do they actually trick their own brains though? Or do they just gaslight their audience into thinking that? If this is all based on the audience reviews

Does the study say anything about the sentiment of the participants? I’m curious if they feel more positive about the experience when they say they’re excited?

Who rates the singing? The audience? Maybe they just like it better if/because the person singing announces that they are excited?

Thx for this 🙏 Also; Smiling! Smiling helps reduce stress-induced hormones in the bloodstream and enhances positive emotions. Great tool to "trick" yourself, and could signal to other persons that you are fine and relaxed and creating a less tension situation 💜
