If you give it enough time, you will suffer. You cannot be both mortal and human without knowing your fair share of pain. This is known as one of the 'marks of existence' in Buddhist philosophy, which argues that if we understand suffering, then we can hope to alleviate, or even overcome it. According to Buddhist philosophy, there are three kinds of suffering. The first is how most people usually understand suffering. It's bodily and physical pain. It's often associated with disease, old age, and, of course, death. You will know pain, you will get sick, and you will die. Secondly, there's the kind of suffering known as dukkha, which is when people cannot accept the finitude and transience of things. We cling to health and wealth as if they are forever. We grieve our loved ones because we mistakenly assume that they were ours to keep for all eternity. But the third kind of suffering is what we might call existential angst, and it's a philosophical dissatisfaction, or even fury, at a cold and meaningless universe. Camus wrote a lot about how we struggle under the reality of an indifferent universe, and the Buddha argued that we suffer because we find no meaning in the world. The recognition of suffering is the first step on the Buddhist journey. When we accept that all things must die, and that suffering is inevitable, we can focus on what's really true, and what really matters. When we realise that life is just a loan, and that everything, and every day, and every one is just a gift, we can appreciate those gifts all the more.
