it seems a lot of colonisation might have mistaken these names for similar sounding ones in the colonisers language. that's what connects séan and John, séamus and James, siobháin and Joan.

it's actually Iain and Eòin in Scottish Gaelic, Ian is the anglicised version. (there's also Seathan, Seoghan etc). We have a similar, and very logical, way of spelling as Irish.
