there has always been a double standard between men and women in these situations. even today, men rarely recieve punishment. but if a woman is unfaithful (even if their significant other was abusive, or their partner had done the same to them) women, at the very least, be ostracized from the public. people's only interest is the scandal, and not what lead them into that situation in the first place
