A lot of Americans have never tried to wrap their heads around how the United States was stolen and developed through lies, disease, displacement and violence. To confront the Palestine issue means having to reckon with a mirrored experience of our own colonialism happening daily and able to be witnessed firsthand through social media videos. It may be sad and leave no easy answers but what writer Layli LongSoldier calls “freedom from denial” is liberating if confronted and utterly important. We are witnessing an occupied people being starved and shot at in lines for bread. We are witnessing a people having the entirety of their bloodlines bombed off a map. A people being made fodder for a land grab. A people like you and I. A people full of poets, healers, flawed individuals, an imperfect people like us. It’s happening with our tax money the governments enabling it without our consent. It has been happening for over 100 years with a blueprint that began on the lands we now inhabit. It’s ok to understand we can’t control everything and answer for our forefathers its not ok to look away when its happening on our dime with elected officials who are bought and compromised. To bear witness is not a futile act its a sign of the record keeping of humanity and a catalyst for movements.
