Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Participation in Iraq in 2003 In 2003, Ukraine took part in the multinational coalition that invaded Iraq with the goal of overthrowing Saddam Hussein’s regime. This was one of the largest foreign contingents within the coalition. •Duration of participation: Ukraine participated from March 2003 and withdrew its troops in July 2008, about five years in total, demonstrating serious support for stabilizing the region. •Results: Ukrainian sappers neutralized hundreds of explosive devices and mines, saving the lives of civilians and allies. Military engineering units worked on restoring roads, bridges, and civilian infrastructure.
