A personality disorder, on the other hand, is a mental health condition characterised by persistent and inflexible patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that deviate significantly from cultural norms and expectations. These patterns can cause significant distress or impair an individual's ability to function in daily life, particularly in relationships and social situations. Unlike ordinary personality traits, the characteristics of a personality disorder are extreme and maladaptive, leading to challenges in managing emotions, maintaining stable relationships, and adapting to change. Common examples include borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and antisocial personality disorder.
