@philosophyminis: In 1987, Donald Davidson gave us a thought #experiment about ‘Swampman.’ It goes like this: Imagine that you decided to treat yourself to a scenic walk, by a swamp, in a lightning #storm . Grey water, buzzing mosquitoes, dangling mangroves, punctuated by lightning strikes. It's a lovely day out. Suddenly, lightning strikes a certain part of the swamp, and by some freak chance of science fiction, animates a perfect replica of you. From this fetid morass stands a Swampman with an identical body composition to you. It walks like you, talks like you, and even has the same memories as you. It goes back home with you and seems to recognize your friends. The question that Davidson asks is: Is the Swampman the same as you? And the answer he gives is ‘no,’ because it hasn't lived the same life as you up till now. The memories it has of your parents, your friends, or your spouse do not match up with any lived reality. The mental representations of the Swampman aren't causally connected to what they represent. So, when we say the Swampman recognizes your friends, that's nonsense. They can't recognize them because they never cognized them in the first place. None of the words that Swampman says, or the thoughts that he has are framed in any way. They were not constructed in space or time; they were given. You are not who you are because of right now. You are the experiences that led to now. #philosophy #personalidentiy #sciencefiction #scifi #swamp

How can a person, at any moment, verify that their memories are real ?

To me, it doesn't matter if his memories are real. If he thinks he lived them and had those experiences, he's basically in the same situation as you. It might as well could be that you're the (pt1)

Love this. Another level: swamp man cannot distinguish its memories as not rooted in lived experiences 😢

1) but we are locked inside our minds without sense organs. the data collected by our sense organs is converted to electrochemical impulses and these create neural pathways.

All memories of experience reside in the brain.

The better question is, who is the "swamp man". Both entities are experiencing the same "now", do you remember the swamp man forming in front of you? Does he have that same memory?

How do we know we aren’t all swamp people with our memories created 5 minutes ago with the rest of the universe?

Doesn't matter. It's still in a state of "being you". The disjunct is the outside world's reaction. Like a jigsaw piece that bears the same part of the image, but doesn't fit in it's alloted place.

Interesting. How does this apply to AI. Ai is effectively the swamp man.

I think in the book Worm it is played well. One antihero who can spawn a clone, intentionally does it in a way both cannot tell who is the original to avoid arguments. they still argue, obviously.
