@philosophyminis: In the 1980s, Frank Jackson gave us one of the most memorable thought experiments in philosophy. When Jackson was writing, he was writing about human thoughts and human knowledge. But it's also a great way to introduce a problem in the #philosophy of #artificialintelligence Here's how the story goes: Imagine there is someone called Mary who is in a black-and-white room with no contact with the outside world. Everything is black and white. But she has access to the vastness of Wikipedia. Over her years, she spends every day and every minute learning about the colour red. She learns that blood is red, roses are red, and that #red is associated with #Love , #passion , danger, or luck. But she has never seen red. Now, one day, Mary leaves her room, and she sees a vibrant red strawberry. She has an experience of red. The question that Jackson asks is: Does Mary learn anything when she sees red? Of course, today, AI plays the role of Mary. Large language models are fed billions and billions of words about billions of things. AI can tell you ten things that are red. It can tell you what happens in the cones in your eyes when they pick up light waves to send to your brain, to process it into the feeling of red. It's processed images of red and can reproduce red in pictures. And it recognizes colours. It picks out pigments, and it can isolate shades. But the question that Jackson asks is, "Does #AI understand what red is? Does it feel redness, or does it feel anything at all?"

Ai is as "feeling" as a lawnmower is. it's just cogs and gears, albeit the electronic version thereof

is there something as red exists? I think it is the problem of universals

do we feel 'red'? or do we associate feelings and experiences with things that are red and thus create a reaction chain to 'red'

What does the experience of red mean other than by associations that are taught? AI can't experience red whereas a child can. We could then interrogate both and be no clearer about the experience!

I wonder if you could teach AI all about red then given a full spectrum of colours could it pick out which colour is red. Would that be a conclusive way to know AI understands?

Mary learns, or at least becomes viscerally aware of, her instinctive emotional response to red. However I can't see why an AI can't be invested with an 'emotional layer'.

The discussion misses the most important point: it doesn't matter if AI understands a concept. What REALLY matters is: Will future AI systems REPLACE 90% of humans / meaningful human activities?❤️

Simple , Yes. Mary learned Red but doesn't know Red. to learn something and know something is vastly different. I could learn English language to the highest degree but doesn't mean I could write a

No. Red will be a vector (large number) for it. Everything which is red will have this number assigned to it as an attribute. When you ask about red- algorithm look for this number and answers.

The analogy of Mary+red, I imagine would have a deeper experience = Understanding of red. The AI bit…Hmm? I see it in two ways: it won't measure up to our imagination, but it will surpass our primal

Do I understand what red is? Or am I spending my time trying to better understand my experiences of sensing life through this tool of muscle and nerve, organs and electro-magnetic soup that I am?

I suppose that this is a question better suitable for synaesthetes as I don't "feel" redness.

This word understanding is interesting, and is consciousness required. Does something have to be there to appreciate redness? The question arises., “who are we?”

It is impossible to know with absolute certainty whether machines are able to feel or not. So with other people, and so with whether we see/feel the same red or not.
