In this clip from Hilsman Middle School in Athens, GA — where I led a two-day literacy event using my book and others — I helped students explore who they are and how they learn. One of the frameworks I use in every keynote is Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory, and here are 2 🔑s to the Keynote that showed up in this moment: 🔑 Intrapersonal Intelligence — I spoke about my fear of public speaking — the same thing I now do for a living. Some fears are meant to be conquered. When you truly know yourself, you can recognize which fears are growth-blockers. And more importantly, you can speak to those fears in a way that connects with others — not pretending they’re gone, but showing how you work through them. 🔑 Linguistic Intelligence — Words shape perspective. In this clip, I say: Fear is a compass. That phrase, inspired by The Art of Impossible by Steven Kotler, gives students a new mental image — fear not as a wall, but as a directional tool. Language becomes the lens through which we reframe our reality. Grateful to the students and staff at Hilsman Middle for the energy, the openness, and the commitment to helping young minds grow.
