Maybe go up and compliment the mom on what a wonderful and well behaved son she has and that she is lucky. That way u can compliment the kid and give the mom a small reality check

Nothing you could do or say would change the moms behavior, but as a kid with a similar parent dynamic, it meant the world to me the few times i saw an adult tell my mom she needed to do better.

the best thing I could think of is just to answer the kids question and ask what his favorite bagel is. being friendly to both him and his mum. lead by example 💖

me personally if someone would have just smiled at me to let me know it was okay I would've been happy. like either way if you talk to to parent or the kid it's definitely ending in a "talk" later.

My mom wasn't abusive like this but she could be awful to me and would often take any embarrassment she felt out on me. That being said, if a stranger stood up for me to my mom, no punishment /1

My gut says: Say Hi to the mom, like she's under a lot of stress. "You doing ok?" Sometimes it's surprising how much this can change the dynamic.
