I’m seeing a lot of people graduating — congratulations. But let me tell you the biggest mistake I made after finishing school: I stayed in the same place I was studying. I stayed in Nyeri. And looking back, I denied myself a chance to grow. Yes, it’s cheaper to live in Kisii, Eldoret, Nyeri, Karatina… But cheap comfort is the most expensive trap you can fall into. Your environment shapes your ambition. Where you live affects how you think, how you work, and how you dream. When I was in Nyeri, I thought earning KES 2,500 for a logo was life-changing. Until I moved to Nairobi and saw graphic designers and web designers driving nice cars, working with big clients, and charging 30K, 50K, 100K for the same work. Not because they were better than me. But because their environment challenged them to think bigger. If you’ve just graduated, here’s the truth: You don’t grow by staying where you are comfortable. You grow by exposing yourself to environments that stretch you. You don’t need to move permanently. Even coming to Nairobi for 2–3 days can shift your mindset. Walk around. See the opportunities. See how people operate. See what is possible. And if you have digital skills — social media management, web design, graphic design, video editing, content creation, virtual assistance — don’t hide them in the countryside. Businesses in Nairobi hire competence, not location. You can manage accounts remotely. You can consult. You can create content from home. Just build a personal brand online that shows what you do. Let people trust your voice. Let your work introduce you before you even walk into a room. But above all — change your environment. Your next level is not where you are. It’s where you need to grow into. Move. Explore. Expose yourself. It will transform you.
