@screenwritinginla: Absolutely love what Spielberg says here. The most important thing for any aspiring filmmaker—or really any creative—is to make finding your unique voice your absolute priority. That’s what will set you apart and make your work stand out. It’s common sense, but so many people clearly don’t put it at the top of the list. I think that’s why there are so many cookie-cutter movies these days. It’s not about mimicking others or chasing trends; it’s about digging deep and discovering what YOU have to say that no one else can. But I also love how he gives permission to make derivative films (any art) at the start. It’s part of the process, part of figuring out what your voice is.
