Do your knees hurt when hiking? Knee pain when hiking is pretty common and it usually occurs due to lack of control at the hips. Hiking on uneven terrain and going down hill are the two most common situations that give people knee pain while enjoying the great outdoors. In both situations hip mobility and stability is key. Walking down hill, the hips must effectively externally rotate in order to accept the body weight when doing down. If the hips can’t ER well, the body weight must be managed somewhere and that can happen at the knees. When walking on uneven terrain, the hips must be able to stabilize to balance the body on one leg. This balance comes from being able to push into the ground to remain upright. Pushing into the ground requires hip internal rotation at the hip. If hip IR is absent the knee may cave in to produce the stability needed. Try this ramp box squat with a pause to help your knees by training your hips to absorb force and create stability. The lowering phase helps build ER and returning to standing from the paused position really improves hip IR. #physicaltherapist #physicaltherapists #strengthcoach
