You finally say it out loud.
Maybe not to everyone. Maybe not even to yourself, fully. But you try it on—quietly, cautiously.
 “I’m gay.”
It feels like both a relief and a risk.

At this point, people often start reaching out—usually to someone they perceive as safe. They might message a friend who liked an LGBTQ+ post. Or follow an account anonymously. Or sit quietly at the back of a support group. They’re watching closely. Testing the waters. Figuring out what kind of person still deserves love.

Many people in this stage start to experiment with labels. They might try “gay,” “queer,” or something else—just to see how it feels. Sometimes they still say “same-sex attraction,” but more often, they’re searching for words that match their experience. It’s like trying on clothes in a dressing room, searching for one that fits.

In this stage, people need company more than advice. They’re already in a mental tug-of-war between self-acceptance and shame. Offering them community—without commentary—can make all the difference. INFO: This carousel is based on the CASS Model of Identity Development. The slides were adapted from a full chapter in my book *Expanding the Borders of Zion*, which explores each stage in much greater depth.

*My book is 50% off with free shipping this month.* I’ve tagged it in this post. It’s a resource I believe in—and I hope it helps. #lgbtq #lds #june #ally #thechurchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints
