Electrolytes are getting a lot of air time at the moment. But what’s the difference between drinking a glass of water and a glass of electrolytes? Are electrolytes the magic answer? Your sweat tastes salty because you’re losing mainly sodium but also some chloride and other electrolytes.  Human bodies are roughly 60% water, and this sits inside your cells. When you sweat and your body is losing water, these cells essentially start to shrink a little bit. Your body is super smart and uses electrolyte levels to balance this, by moving salts in and out of your cells, excreting them in sweat, it is trying to balance your levels in order to keep your cells in a range where they are happy.  When the cells volume decrease reaches a certain level, that triggers your thirst response- the ‘omg give me a glass of water right now’ feeling.  When you drink a normal glass of water, this moves into cells by osmosis, a process driven by the solute concentrations across the cell membranes.  When you drink an electrolyte solution, this causes an enhanced water absorption into the cells due to the presence of sodium and potassium.  So the key difference is the speed and efficiency of hydration- electrolyte solutions generally absorb more quickly. They help maintain the fluid balance by preventing excess water from leaving cells and they also play a key role in preventing Hyponatremia. There is such thing as drinking too much water and it’s more dangerous than being dehydrated.   The key take aways are that electrolyte drinks are a really useful tool for exercisers. Drinking one before, during or after exercise will help your body cope with the demands you are putting on it. But if you are eating a healthy and balanced diet, you will have enough of them from there!  The benefit is coming from how it helps your body absorb the water you are taking on board.
