Not so fun fact: researchers did a study with rats. They put the rates in a cage and gave them an electric shock, then reacked the rats’ stress responses in their brains. They found that the shock produced a stress response (mind blowing). But! In the second half of the study, when the rat was shocked, it could bite an adjacent, lower ranking rat. They found that this significantly decreased the stress response. This is called displacement aggression. @robert.sapolsky talks about it in his incredible book “Behave”. They’ve also found that when a local sports team loses a game they were expected to win, domestic ab*se rates rise in the following week or so. Personally i find this disheartening, and wonder why it’s such a powerful stress reliever to take your anger out on someone else. BUT. Just because its an impulse doesn’t mean we have to do it.
