$A sweet little stepped jar from my last firing, coated in a thick layer of dark green feldspathic crackle glaze and reduction fired to cone ten. This piece almost oxidised, you can see it in the darker green section on the finished vessel, this is the tone created in a neutral atmosphere and if positioned just a fraction closer to the burner port, (where the flames jettison into the kiln), there would have been a brighter yellow streak within this darker region. Whenever I make a video like this it’s the wadding that inevitably comes up and has questions asked about it, so here’s some information of that white, clay-like stuff you see me jam around the underside of the lid. I mix this material up in-house from 50% kaolin, (I use EPK), and 50% coarse alumina hydrate. You can use find alumina hydrate but it creates a mixture that fires into a denser lump that can stick to the stoneware, whereas the coarse stuff is well, more grogged and tends to stick less and leave less residue. I place them on the waxed underside of the lid, they stick nicely onto this, and then I lower the lid gently into place on the jar, the lid now suspended, neither component actually touching, the wadding creating a barrier between the two. This saves space in the kiln and does something that I very rarely capture in photographs and video, and that’s ensure the parts match. Like mentioned at the start of this text, this darker region spans the body and lid, yet if placed into the kiln in different places, the parts wouldn’t match as neatly as they do. #glaze #celadon #reductionfired #pottery #ceramics$
