I literally made up a fantasy law that homes were taxed by sq ft on the ground floor. To explain why wizard towers existed.

There was one guy who couldn't get approved for some like shelter for his horses, so he installed a giant "table and chairs" as an "art installation" that his horses could happen to stand under.

It was the opposite in my town. They taxed based on the number of doors, so the old mansions have giant windows that go out to the balconies.

My cousin had a 6 bedroom shed in Portland Oregon. It had no kitchen so it was not taxable as a house, he cooked in an RV that parked inside the 'shed'

Another example: Amsterdam taxed homes based on their width. Result: very slim and tall homes!

Oh yeah. In Romania they did this with chicken coops and such so they wouldn’t get charged tax for birds on the grounds

So much architecture is influenced by people skirting taxes and I love it.

This is not really architectural but I believe in some countries people live in half built houses for the same reason. Apartment buildings that look in construction but people already live in.

The Amsterdam houses are a good example, it was taxes based on the width, so they created narrow and tall houses, resulting on the infamous dutch stairs.

In Vancouver Canada many houses have the ground floor 18 inches below ground level, because at the time they were built that made it legally a basement which didn't count towards the square footage.
