@personalfinanceclub: Picking investments really be like this. I often get asked "what's the best index fund" and the reality is there IS no "best" index fund. Index funds all do pretty much the same thing. They funnel the growth of all the companies in the stock market directly back to you. Choosing between them really isn't the point. The point is just picking one that works then shoveling a lot more money in for decades. Here's how to pick one: 1. Pick index funds that don't charge any transactional fees. Generally ANY ETF (since ETFs trade free on most US brokerages) or the mutual fund version that matches your brokerage. i.e. Only buy Vanguard mutual funds if you're using Vanguard's website. 2. Pick 1-3 index funds that cover US, international and bond markets. An example portfolio might be VTI, VXUS, and BND. 3. Dump more money in whenever you have more to invest! That's it.
