My grandfather passed away on October 13th, 2025, around 6:45 PM in Cupertino, California. The moment could not have been filled with more love and comfort. I was right next to him when he let go. My grandfather taught me to lead with gentle and humble love through his actions. I hope I taught him to love his abilities as the only other deaf person in my family. His perseverance guided my family out of poverty in Hong Kong, and his calligraphy skills won my grandma’s heart in Canada. Having interviewed them consistently throughout my years of growing up, my grandmother asked me to be the one to tell their story. One of my first questions in response was, “How did you fall in love?” In this moment, she remembered that she not only had the answer but the story itself. Wordlessly, she left the room and returned with the heart of my own beginning: A black leather briefcase brimming with letters my grandma sent to my grandfather during the summer of 1963. Shifting the numbered lock, it popped open with his birthday. 122. December 2nd. Cracking the lid open for the first time in years, we discovered that not only had she kept the letters my grandpa wrote to her, but he had kept every single one of hers. Today, I begin to tell their story at the end. With hours of footage, scanned film, and email exchanges, it is my dream to translate this work into a gallery show—an interactive history to move through and grow with. If anyone has information on how to fulfill this, please reach out to me. I love you forever, Grandpa. Stay well. Be well. I miss you. I’ll always be thinking of you. You’re with us. You’re with me.
