Fursuit Friday always brings the same old joke: “Furries must be mentally disturbed.” We have all gotten the hater comments on social media or elsewhere. “Grown man even.” “Get a job.” “You wanna be an animal, we’ll treat you like one.” Here is the truth. The furry fandom is not a diagnosis. It is creativity. It is connection. It is community. It is art that you can literally wear. Some people unwind by fixing up old cars. Some people watch sports. Some people spend their lives in their garage doing woodworking projects. Some people get involved in musical theatre or community productions. I enjoy art of cartoon-like animal characters with human characteristics. I dress up as a virtual raccoon or, right now, a cartoon-style red panda in the real world. I act silly and I hang out with others, online or in person, who enjoy the same things. This is not delusion. It is not dysfunction. Furries do not think we are animals. We are fully aware that we are human. We simply have creativity, imagination, and a sense of childlike wonder that never left us. Being active in the furry fandom is one of the healthiest and happiest things I have ever added to my life. And honestly, being part of a community that celebrates self-expression, kindness, and a ridiculous amount of fluff has kept me more grounded than anything else. It is also a healthy escape from the mundane, repetitive, and sometimes harsh realities of middle-aged life. It is a healthy outlet, especially in tumultuous times. Everyone has issues. If you are reading this and think you do not have at least one personal issue, you are fooling yourself. Some people bottle their issues up and store them away, hoping the bottle never falls and shatters. That is not healthy, and eventually, it always breaks. Everyone needs diversion. Everyone needs escape. Sometimes that escape comes in the form of spending thousands of dollars on sports equipment, tools, golf gear, car parts, or extravagant vacations. My escape comes in the form of VR equipment, art, and custom-made costumes of a cartoon character I invented. There are several reasons people find furries strange or disturbing, and one of the biggest is that it is not mainstream. People do not understand it. No one they know does it, it is not common on television or in daily life, so it becomes weird and taboo. Everyone knows someone who isolates in a garage working on cars or woodworking. Everyone knows someone who fixes clocks or collects stamps, coins, or cards. Everyone knows someone who spends all their time planning the next Caribbean cruise or vacation. Everyone knows someone who gets wasted every weekend at what is essentially a giant park with perfect grass, water features, and sand traps, occasionally whacking a tiny ball with expensive metal sticks. Everyone knows someone who spends all their free time volunteering for their kids’ high school. Everyone knows someone who sits on a couch staring at a glowing screen while grown men they do not know run around with a ball. Not everyone knows a furry. People fear and reject what they do not understand or what is not common in their world. It is a society issue. People are uncomfortable with different. It is also well known that the furry fandom has a high concentration of LGBTQIA+ individuals and neurodivergent folks, which adds another layer of “different” that some people struggle with. Furries are not broken. Not any more than anyone else. We just have non-mainstream diversion. We are unapologetically expressive with our diversion. And sometimes, that expressive comes with paws. 🦝✨ #furrytiktok #fursuitfriday #scruffenergy #choosejoy #positivevibes
