I think it refers to larger wallets that have room for checkbooks! At least that’s what my grandmother used to say 😂 I also think it’s primarily a southern thing?

He's wrong, you're right. In the northeastern US, at least, we call a handbag/purse a pocketbook (or pock-a-book with a Boston accent 😂) and I've never understood why but I do it anyway 🤷♀️🤣

This is definitely a regional thing. The Midwest would not refer a purse as a pocketbook, but I have family in the northeast that would.

I grew up in CT and my mother 78 yrs old always called her purse/handbag a pocketbook. I think older generation used that term. Googled in the 1820’s just started calling a handbag a pocketbook

The original definition was a small book that fit in your pocket, your husband is partially correct because it can also refer to spending. Like, that’s too expensive for my pocketbook.

It must be an east coast thing? I’m from California and we don’t use the term pocketbook to describe a purse. Maybe they call it that because they would carry a checkbook in their purse?

Yes, especially in the southern part of the US. A pocketbook is referring to a purse/handbag. My sister still uses this word. 😅
