@pt_with_jt: Longevity is a word that’s getting tossed around a lot now. It’s something people to seem to be chasing as they learn more about how the body and mind change over time. Before I dive into the tips I have for you from a physical therapist’s perspective, let me start off by saying that the aging process is part of the human experience. It’s okay if you’re not quite as athletic or as mobile as you were when you were in college (life has probably changed a lot since then!). What I want you to do is shift your mindset from comparing yourself to where you were when you were younger to doing small things throughout your day that will help you get the most out of what you have RIGHT NOW. These tips might help… 1. Listen to your body - the human body has been and always will be the most advanced system in the world. Your body is beyond brilliant so when you feel your body is telling you to back off of a certain exercise/position, listen to it. That’s how you allow it to heal itself. 2. Add variety to your fitness routine - just like you learn to diversify your investment portfolio, diversifying the types of exercises you do in a given week can pay off huge. By using different muscles at different angles and intensities, you’re training multiple systems of your body to function at a high level and preventing overuse injuries. 3. Emphasize rest and recovery at least one day a week - rest isn’t glorified. Working out until your face goes numb and waking up to do it all over again the next day unfortunately is. And that’s not to say pushing your body to the limits isn’t an amazing thing that you should strive for, I’m simply asking you not to forget to let the body rebuild itself by taking intentional time away from that push.
