@coacheugeneteo: The Hise Breathing Shrug for the upper back is traditionally performed with a barbell on the back with an intentional inhale on the way up and exhale on the lowering. I’m not sure if it was ever performed as part of a superset with the 20 rep Breathing Squat protocol, which was also invented by Joe Hise, but that’d be one painful pairing if so. I like to abduct the upper arm on all of my shrugs regardless of implement. This positions the mid and upper trap fibres into a better line of pull. Anywhere from around 30 degrees to 90 degrees is good. But before you get your protractor out, just find a width that feels good for you.
