God this is so true. We are a heavy RP group.They wanted to use xp this campaign and we will go two or three sessions without combat. I’ve started giving them 500 XP In the sessions with no combat.

I started a new campaign with a group of buddies who are not new to dnd and I'm letting then level at a fast rate..I can't wait for them to hit 12-20 when they die they will be revived by a lich

This is why my group levels up every 7th session. Just like that, no conditions, no milestones. That sat us free. And whenever XP are needed by the rules we are using gaming days as currency. Easy. 🙂

Side note though, was playing Baldur’s Gate 3, we have to destroy a sturdy door, so we used Karlach as she had the axe. Made easy work of the door… then she leveled up from 1 to 2. We laughed so hard

I do milestone with my kids group. They don’t give a F about leveling up. They barely know their characters. They just play to create a story.

This is a thing that makes me interested in Draw Steel, their leveling system is based on Victories, but Victories don't have to be combat 1/

Bc I run for newbies I don’t do leveling until they actually know what they’re doing bc too many don’t actually know what to do and getting higher doesn’t help in fact makes it worse for them😭

My gamer brain makes me think “levels” are quick. So I’m gonna think of DnD levels as “perks.” Perks are slow to acquire, but give a much better bonus than a level
