@philosophyminis: It's really hard to imagine another kind of intelligence. In science fiction worlds, like #StarWars and #StarTrek, we essentially have a human #intelligence projected on an #alien body. It's a brain, coordinating a nervous system, just like us. But in his #book Other Minds, the philosopher Peter Godfrey-Smith presents us with another kind of intelligence altogether, here on Earth: #cephalopods In humans, we have a ‘chordate’ intelligence, which means that we have a central governing brain, operating a spine, that branches out to our nervous system. The result is that more than 90% of our neurons are in our brains, which control and synchronize the entire body. Cephalopods, though, developed their intelligence on an entirely different evolutionary path known as ‘convergent #evolution .’ Their intelligence is distributed throughout their body. An #octopus limbs will have a will of their own. They think for themselves and can behave quite independently of any central governing brain. The brain sometimes does coordinate action across the entire body, but limbs can choose to cooperate or not. Looking at other minds is a great way to understand our own. Godfrey-Smith, for example, argues that our #consciousness might be a byproduct of our brains need to coordinate our internal and external environments. It's a kind of sensory feedback loop. So, if we ever do meet an alien, it'll almost certainly think differently to us, because our way of thinking is only just one way. #philosophy #epistemology #biology

Lee Taylor :
The fact that we have to hemispheres means that we really have two minds that cooperate, so we're not so different from cephalopods.

What’s fascinating is that there’s evidence to suggest the two halves of our own brains are somewhat independent. CGP Grey’s “You are Two” video is a good watch.

I’m sure in Star Trek there was an episode with a gaseous cloud witch had some kind of intelligence that Picard needed to communicate with to save the enterprise

We have neurons throughout our bodies as well and I think they store and process memory as well, though obviously not to the extent of cephalopods

also collective inteligence like ants, termites, bees, individuals dont have reproductive right. ants in amazon would make boats of out colony death to transport the queen along the river

The sci-fi writer Adrian Tchaikovsky does a deep dive into this kind of intelligence in his series Children of Time. And spiders and cellular intelligence too.

I agree on the slim chance concept, but in a large enough array, the same minute possibilities will arise again and again.

it's funny that people think our consciousness is contained entirely inside our skull. we also have the enteric nervous system that influences everything about our behavior

the story of Blindsight has a really interesting take on this; Sentience and Intelligence are treated as two completely different things. The aliens are hyper intelligent, but basically unknowable.
