Studying to become a teacher and I just learned this😅 subtraction is about finding the difference. They’re showing that you can find the difference by starting by 9 and the count upwards.

They’re leave to group number to 10 now. Basically make groups of 10’s then add the remainder. My son 2nd grade same thing

It’s B. 9+1=10… then you can substitute 10 so it’s (9+1)+6=16… so 16-9=1+6… which is 7

Basically you try to make it simplier by make the 2 digit number to 1 digit number. In this case 16 is 2 digit so you try to break it down to multiple 1 digit numbers. 16 can be breakdown to 10+6

the one with the 16 in it 😂 but fr it's to help them build number sense and practice mental math. instead of thinking "16 take away 9" they can think of "how far from 9 up to 16"

Hurts my brain but if it’s B- 9 is 1 away from 10 (10 is a nice round number) and then 10 is 6 away from 16…so 9 is 7 away (1+6) from 16 <- I dunno what I just said lol

Fortunately, there are more ways to solve 16-9 than this way. Every kid learns differently and providing questions with different logic will help them understand the various ways.

it is i am not sure but for me it feels like they are cutting backwards. so instead of subtracting they are starting from 9 and see what's needed to get up to 16. so 9+1=10 and then there is 6 (1/2)
