Manners are really IMPORTANT but Sir and Mam are not used outside if the US (my experience) you just say the persons name and adress them formally but Mum and Dad would be „Yes mum“/„I understand Dad“

I’ve lived in Illinois my entire life but I moved to Georgia for 3 years and I was shocked having to say ma’am and sir in school or I’d get in trouble but it’s not a bad thing to have to say it 🫶🏼

I'm Canadian it's not a thing here however adults use it sometimes with strangers. I think it's wonderful that u are teaching her this and being respectful.

In Canada, we say yes mom or yes dad to our parents and for like other people like people at stores or people we don’t know we say yes ma’am or yes, sir

I was raised to say ma’am/sir to anyone that was above , including parents, teachers, elders, as sign of respect. I learned to carry on with jobs (coworkers/customers)! Really good youre teaching her!

I’m from Australia and raised with impeccable manners, to me I just find it weird that she calls you mam and not mum. But that’s just a cultural thing. Yes Mum, thank you Mum.
