@pbsnews: Part 2: Educating Gazan students amid the ruins of war It’s back-to-school season, but in Gaza, 625,000 students have no building to return to. Most of Gaza’s 560 schools have been either damaged or destroyed. More than half of the schools have been directly hit by Israel and the few remaining are now acting as shelters for the displaced. “We're supposed to go to school. Everyone is going back to school, except us in Gaza. You're so lucky,” said 8-year-old Batul Abu Asee who is one of three triplets that lost their home and have been displaced multiple times. Batul and her siblings live in a canvas home in the Al-Zawayda camp and attend a school also made of canvas. The U.N. says more than 9,500 children enrolled in schools have been killed and at least 85 percent of Gaza's schools have been directly hit or damaged in the war that has raged on since Oct. 7. “When we used to go to school, they would teach us that school is our second home, but now it is, in fact, our only home,” said University student Onana Abu Al-Khair. #pbsnews #pbsnewshour #newshour #israel #gaza #school #backtoschool #israelgazawar #schoolyear
