The difference between “was not” and “was not anymore”: one mimics those you love and forces you to question your reality. It causes doubts, suspicion, it turns into paranoia. It looks like the one you love, but cannot be trusted. What are its intentions, and how could I ever fight it? I could kill a monster, but could I kill a monster if it looked like my loved ones? Could I ever be sure that I killed the right one? “Not anymore” implies that they once were those you loved, but have been changed. It implies loss, mourning. They were my loved one, but are not anymore. It implies the death of what was, tainted by something sinister. How much of your loved one remains? Will they be aware of it when I kill the monster they’ve become? Will they feel pain? Will they blame me? Does it make it easier or harder to kill, knowing it was, but ceased to be, the one you loved? Can I live with myself knowing what I’ve done? Can I carry on with the memory of their final moments being at my hand? Can I accept that there was no saving them? Can I forgive myself for not trying?

honestly the "I dunno but it sure ain't a deer" feels like a 'at first glance it could be mistaken for a deer, but the moment you look at it directly, the only thing your sure of is it ain't a deer.

I'm native but grew up with a lot of southern family, the worlds would often mesh when I'd hear an exchange of "oh look, a deer." "that ain't a deer. lock the doors and close that damn window."
