Lifta (Le), Jerusalem is one of the last remaining Palestinian villages that were depopulated during the 1948 Nakba and left largely intact. While more than 400 other Palestinian villages were either destroyed or resettled by Israelis, Lifta stands uniquely frozen in time — its stone houses empty, neglected, but still standing at the western entrance to Jerusalem. With roots as a Palestinian Arab village going back at least 700 years, Lifta was once among the wealthiest communities in the Jerusalem area. Its women were known for their intricate embroidery, and the village became renowned for producing Thob Ghabani bridal dresses - made from fine cotton overlaid with golden silk floral patterns woven in Aleppo. Lifta's clothing shops attracted visitors from across Palestine and the Levant. In early 1948, the entire population was forcibly expelled following attacks by the Haganah, one of the main Zionist militias. The village has remained uninhabited ever since — a silent witness to the Nakba and its aftermath. Ethnicall cleansed In 2021, Israel's Land Authority announced plans to open Lifta to real estate development, granting a 98-year contract for the construction of 259 buildings, commercial spaces, and a hotel. If implemented, the project would result in the demolition of most of the village's remaining historic structures. Thanks to petitions by former residents, Lifta was placed on the 2018 World Monuments Watch list of endangered sites. It is also included on UNESCO's tentative list of World Heritage Sites - a move that provoked threats from then-Prime Minister Netanyahu to withdraw Israel from the organization entirely. Lifta is an extraordinary - and haunting - place to visit. Its survival is a rare but fragile testament to Palestinian presence and cultural heritage. Its destruction would not only erase ancient stone homes, but also sever one of the last remaining ties to a rich and rooted Palestinian past. #fyp #foryoupage
