Why Indigenous Americans Must Stop Spending With Those Who Hate Us — And Start Building Together Indigenous communities are being drained — not just of money, but of power, identity, and future. Every time we spend our dollars with groups that show us disrespect, ignore our sovereignty, mock our culture, or exploit our lands, we’re funding our own oppression. That needs to stop. 1. Economic Power = Political Power Money talks. It funds campaigns, builds infrastructure, and controls narratives. Right now, Indigenous money is leaving Indigenous communities and enriching businesses that give nothing back — or worse, work against us. That’s backwards. We can’t expect to be respected when we’re financially feeding those who disrespect us. 2. No One Respects the Powerless Let’s be real: America doesn’t care about poor or divided groups. Respect isn’t given; it’s earned — and it’s demanded by those who have leverage. When Indigenous people unite economically, we become a force. When we’re scattered, we’re ignored. 3. Other Groups Build For Themselves — So Should We Other communities keep their dollars circulating among their own businesses for a reason: it builds wealth, opportunity, and legacy. That’s how neighborhoods turn into power bases. Indigenous communities need to adopt that mindset — not out of hate, but out of survival and strategy. 4. Colonialism Didn’t Die — It Just Went Retail Look at the stores in our communities. How many are Indigenous-owned? How many profits stay local? Most of the time, the money flows one way — out. That’s modern colonization. We’re still being extracted from. It’s time to flip the script. 5. We Can’t Afford to Stay Divided Tribal divisions, internal rivalries, and outside influence are keeping us fragmented. While we argue or compete, other groups organize, profit, and grow stronger. We’re losing because we’re not working as one. Unity isn’t optional — it’s the only way out. ⸻ What Needs to Happen • Buy Indigenous. Every dollar is a vote. Spend it where it builds our future. • Invest in Our Own. Support Indigenous entrepreneurs, farmers, builders, and educators. • Create Systems. Schools, banks, clinics, media outlets — owned and run by us, for us. • Cut Off the Exploiters. If they disrespect us, they don’t deserve our money. Period. • Educate and Mobilize.
