I have been putting on Teflon tape for 20 years and I have never seen somebody use almost half a roll on one fitting and then piped dope to back it up

That was way too much thread tape; when he threaded that fitting back out the thread tape wasn’t even compressed into the threads. 4 to 5 wraps maximum on fittings.
