@dsgeyer: I learned my first marketing lesson at 6. Here’s what it taught me about trust: Shampoo doubled their sales by adding "wash, rinse, repeat" to the instructions. Clever tactic but at the end of the day it's a form of manipulation. It employs: • Fear • Peer pressure • And artificial needs It worked in the short term. But the trade off is: eroded trust. What if their focus was on why they exist in the first place? • Help people have healthier hair • Help people feel confident with their hair This would inspire. This would build an army of loyal advocates. The proven way to build a more loyal fanbase is this: • Get clear on why we do what we do • Communicate that purpose with your creations Think about creators out there who demonstrate this. • Taylor swift • Nike • Oprah Winfrey • Harley-Davidson • Steve Jobs They have unbelievable market share. Why? They focus on why they exist in the first place. Then they create based on that. No need for manipluations.
the reason we all shower/bathe daily today is soap companies in the 40s/50s marketing with shame messaging to get us here. sad to say that they did actually get sustained business from it.
