I'm a psych RN. Why do UTI patients w/confusion get an abx in the ED and get shoved onto a psych unit? How can they see them as medically cleared when the delirium is most likely from the UTI?

my father had acute delirium. 6 months later, he hasn't recovered. went to the hospital completely healthy for a minor procedure now is a shell of the man he was.

I had delirium tremens from alcohol and I was hallucinating and having the most paranoid thoughts. I would never wish it on someone.

we experienced this with my 96 yr old aunt after she was in the hospital for a week w/ sepsis from a UTI. she came home and was in & out, convinced she could walk, hit me when I tried to help her.

My great grandfather was in the hospital so they put mitts on him to prevent him from removing the IV. Turns our the mitts were covering his watch that the hospital had left on him and it was cutting

What about treatment in the meantime? Sepsis doesn’t clear up overnight and preventing a patient from harming themselves when delirious can be difficult

I had aseptic meningitis for years (teens) but until I had pneumococ meningitis and pointed out the feverishness and confusion I was describing all these years ws the same, thyd said “health anxiety”
