Following Carnegie Mellon University’s restrictions on an iconic free speech site, a group of 10 students from the robotics, engineering, chemistry, art, psychology and theater schools built a new one last night. Under cover of darkness, students wheeled a wooden fence across Forbes Avenue and placed it in front of Warner Hall to face the office of CMU President Farnam Jahanian. Last week after an AI and energy summit on campus, CMU leadership banned students from using The Fence for the first time in its century of existence. In the hours leading up to the event featuring President Trump, the concrete wall bore words of opposition, including: “Protest the summit” and “No rapists on our campus.” This morning, the wooden installation displayed historical expressions from The Fence alongside a central message: “This is the speech we’re protecting.” Early this morning, CMU’s president notified campus that The Fence is again open for student use.
