as long as cotton candy is airy it'll never be truly black because the air retracts light causing the grey coloring. Just like when you see candy makers stretch candy dough on a hook and it lightens

Have you tried drying the sugar back out after adding the dye? Squid ink, black cocoa and charcoal might be fun. Also starting with raw/turbinado sugar could give you a head start since it’s brown

Is it possible to make cotton candy with brown sugar (maybe dried out if you’re worried about moisture?) as a baker, its easier to make black frosting if you start with a brown base instead of white

Try melting the sugar, then adding the color and maybe some charcoal dust, then let it crystallized and regrind it into granules for spinning. The dye coated sugar is still clear/white on the inside

melt the sugar, mix color, then recrystallize and break back down to granules. If you mix the food coloring while the sugar's hot, it may help with the white sugar color.

I definitely agree with the people saying to melt the sugar with the dye to make it deeper. that being said, you're realistically probably not ever going to get true black cotton candy, since the air

I am really tempted to get the sample pack but I am deathly allergic to strawberries and it has two strawberry flavors. if I order it can I request they be replaced?

As a graphic designer it’s important to understand how black works on something like a screen. Your screen is black not by the leds but the moniter it self. This logic can apply hear. The sugar is …

Don’t know if it’ll work for this but when I worked at a dq I used to make the black cake icing & I would use black, green, blue & purple to get straight black undertones.

A Rambutan rind is use to make black dye for fabrics, I wonder if it would work for sugar if dissolved and then evaporated back down to sugar crystals, or just buying black sugar?

I think the addition of air is making it less saturated no matter the color. Maybe some dry powder food color sprinkled on the fibers themselves while spinning and then touch ups after as well

You probably won’t get black the way you want due to the sugar it’s self. it has crystallized so it acts like a prism refracting light. So it will always result in grey. You have failed successfully!

maybe it would help if you let the sugar/food coloring mixture sit for a few hours before spinning to help the dye get deeper into the granules

what if you melt the sugar so the food coloring fully mixes in, cool it, and then crack it up and use that

Have you tried starting with brown sugar so it isn’t as far of a jump from the sugar color to black??????

Ultramarine blue + burnt umber brown = black in art. So try a dark blue and a near dark brown?

maybe if you baked the color into it so it's not so sludgy? or perhaps try black sanding sugar sprinkles.

I would add blue and orange with the black. Thinking in hair terms, if someone has white hair we’d add orange or red to the hair before taking it black so it doesn’t go blue/green/or muddy in color.

It’s going to be almost impossible given you spin the sugar which is white ti make it. And then it creates spaces between the fibers which your eye will perceive as white.

Try purple and green then black. Or mixing all colors together. Manic Panic makes their super black color by mixing a bunch of different colors together. Probably not the same science but worth a try

I’m think of it from a hairstylist prospective kind of like bleached hair you have to add all the primary colors back so you aren’t putting color on just a white substance? Does that make sense?

the purpley black is giving spooky season 👏can you spin it and then like roll it through black sparkly sprinkles, like the tiny sugary ones? I wanna see how the sparkles look too 🥺🤭
