@pbsnews: Young Latinos who don't speak Spanish are reclaiming their culture after facing shaming While language can connect people to their culture and be a source of pride, it can also bring about embarrassment and anxiety. According to the Pew Research Center, 78 percent of U.S. Hispanics say it's not necessary to speak Spanish to identify as Latino. Still, 54 percent of those who don't speak the language say other Latinos have made them feel badly about it. many parents don't want to teach spanish to their kids, taking away the opportunity to be bilingual and conect with their culture.

My parents purposefully DIDN’T teach us bc they saw others held back in school. I am teaching myself as an adult now, but i noticed the yt ppl get more praise for trying while i get shamed for it

I believe if you are born in a 2 language family, the kids should be taught both at an early age...if not then the parents are at fault. Not the kids

People don’t get it. When you aren’t raised in an environment where speaking Spanish in the house wasn’t important it doesn’t become as important as an adult. It’s up to the person. We still get shame

the language is the key to conect with the culture. You can understand song lyrics, news from latin countries, social media, YouTube... if not you only have USA culture

I grew up with two Spanish speaking parents who only spoke English at home . I never learn the language growing up. I feel like a lot of the spanish community has put me down for not speaking the language. So I have identity more to just being an American with Spanish background. Because I always feel rejected by the Spanish community.

As a Latina that had to learn English as a second language. You have to have the will power to learn, and get out of your comfort zone regardless of your circumstance. Currently learning portuguese.

I grew up in northern California & my parents refused to teach us, so they can speak together & us not know.
I get harassed from my fellow Latinos.

I think what people don’t understand is that once parents don’t teach it a disconnect from their culture and people forms and that’s a bridge that’s hard to gap

See I don’t see the point people blaming their parents cuz at a certain point you can make your own decisions. My Spanish was bad cuz my schools didn’t let me speak but as I got older I chose to learn
