I had a character born at the start of the series, so I used him as an anchor point for how old everyone else was throughout the story. At least where their exact ages mattered.

This is also important for pop culture references. If your character is 20-25, they probably don’t like the same music and movies an author in their mid 30s and 40s does. They probably haven’t even heard of some bands the author wants to reference haha.
