@pbsnews: President Joe Biden formally apologized Friday to Native Americans for the United States' role in the Indigenous boarding school system, calling it a "sin on our soul." "Quite frankly, there's no excuse that this apology took 50 years to make ... there will always be a significant mark of shame, a blot on American history," Biden said from the Gila River Indian Community during his first visit as president to Native Country. No president has ever apologized for the government-run boarding school system that traumatized generations of Indigenous families across its 150-year history. The U.S. government forcibly separated thousands of Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian children from their parents and sent them to remote boarding schools for assimilation and the eradication of their culture. The children were banned from speaking their language, forced to do manual labor and suffered physical and sexual abuse. Nearly 1,000 children died while attending the schools, according to the Interior Department. #joebiden #nativeamerican #school #schools #apology #news #breakingnews #pbsnews #pbs

I’ve cried so hard and I thank you. I didn’t realize I needed to hear this. I’m from Canada. I’m the first generation that wasn’t forced into a residential school. I still felt the effects
