in the episode where barney and Robin explained they were getting divorced the children weren't born yet and therefore wouldn't remember the marriage so there's nothing to convince them

He wasn’t portrayed as a bad person. He was portrayed as a human with all his flaws but Ted also portrayed himself like that. Every character was portrayed as human being with flaws.

I don't think thats the case as there is no point in showing "uncle" Barney as a bad guy. I think Barney is told this way because Ted actually saw him like this, plus the nostalgia factor
