personal rule of thumb in cases like this - apps and drinks where everyone is sharing and if for some reason the waiter doesn't ask prior how to split I don't mind it even if everyone's meal is within

I've never once had friends suggest splitting it evenly. We always pay for our own. Whomever ordered the appetizer pays for the appetizer.

My group of friends often orders apps for the table, we sometimes fight over getting the app added to our bills. Splitting evenly when you ordered a salad is rude to that person.

Idk why this is an issue to begin with. If yall order stuff in similar price and shared apps split. If you ordered stuff with a drastic price difference ($20 salad v. $70 steak) pay for what you got.
