My reputation has been threatened many times. Sometimes it was because of something i did, but sometimes it was from hyperbolic rumors of something i did. Regardless, the solution to me seems to be similar in both scenarios. Don’t actually be a jerk. If you actually did something wrong, and apologizing won’t get you in legal trouble, it’s likely worth apologizing- but i’ve found its pretty effective to ignore + prove wrong. And you’ll lose some people regardless- which, i will admit, has been disappointing every time- but i tell myself that if they believe something they hear about me more the truth they see about me- they’re not worth my time. I hope im right.
